White oyster mushroom

Scientifically known as Pleurotus florida, is one of the commonly used edible mushroom in cooking. It is rich in protein, Vitamin Bs, Vitamin C, and Niacin.

Fruiting Body

White oyster mushroom with white colour fruiting body and grows in shelf-like clusters. It has stubble to nearly absent stem. Its white ‘cap’ growth in kidney-shaped or fan-shaped, with size broad about 4 to 15cm.

Medicinal Properties

Lowers Blood Glucose Level

A study was done to assess the effect of reducing blood glucose upon consuming mushroom. This investigation was conducted in BIRDEM hospital from July 2005 to January 2006 with 89 subjects. Results from the study shows that oyster mushroom reduced blood glucose in diabetic subjects [1].

Anti-oxidant

The anti-oxidant activity of oyster mushroom on lipid peroxidation and anti-oxidant status of major organs of rats was conducted. Results suggested that oyster mushroom contains anti-oxidant activity [2].

Prevention of Cancer

An experiment shows that the presence of lectin in oyster mushrooms prevent cancer in the connective tissues.
